Mardi Gras @ CM
Described as "one of the great sandwiches of the world," the Muffuletta originated in 1906 in the New Orleans French Quarter at Central Grocery. A typical Muffuletta consists of one Muffuletta loaf, split horizontally and covered with a marinated olive salad, then layered with Capicola, Salami, Mortadella, Emmentaler cheese and Provolone cheese. The olive salad is considered the heart of the sandwich, and consists of olives, celery, cauliflower, and carrot, combined and marinated with olive oil and seasonings. Though we can’t take you to the French Quarter, we can take your taste buds there with our selection of deli meats and cheeses, Muffuletta bread and olive salad.
The King Cake of Mardi Gras tradition is a ring of twisted bread topped with sugar icing colored purple (Justice), green (Faith), and gold (Power), taking its name from the Biblical three kings. Tradition states that their journey to Bethlehem took twelve days (the Twelve Days of Christmas), and that they arrived to honor the Christ child on Epiphany. The season for King Cake extends from the end of the Twelve Days of Christmas (Twelfth Night and Epiphany Day), through to Mardi Gras day.
King Cakes come with a small plastic baby, which is to be hidden inside the cake, and the person who gets the baby is declared king or queen of the party. The monarch is usually obligated to supply the next King Cake or host the next party or both. This year, Central Market has three new varieties of King Cake to offer, and they are delicious! In addition to the traditional King Cake, we now have Almond Cream, Strawberry and Cream Cheese-filled varieties.
