Kent Rathbun to Appear at Thrill of the Grill with New Line!

Written by Aimee D, eFoodie editor on Tuesday, April 20 2010

Want to make a lobster shooter like those ones at Abacus? Or toss a Caesar salad to Jasper's perfection?!

Kent Rathbun, one of Texas’ most popular chefs and proprietor of Abacus, Jasper’s, Rathbun’s Blue Plate Kitchen and Zea WoodFire Grill will launch his very first product line: Kent Rathbun Elements.

Having created some of the nation’s most talked about restaurant concepts, the James Beard-nominated chef and “Iron Chef America” winner brings his signature blend of flavors to the home cook with a total of 11 wet and dry products. And the only store where you'll find the line is Central Market!

To launch these divine new sauces and rubs, available exclusively at Central Market stores and his restaurant locations, Rathbun will travel the state of Texas with a giant 18’ smoker in tow to each Central Market location for a Texas-sized cookout for the food emporium’s annual “Thrill of the Grill” celebration. Word is he's going to do smoked pork shoulder for sampling!

Our “Thrill of the Grill” has gained so much popularity it will be held for two full weeks for the first time this year. The dates are April 23 through May 2, with most of the activities taking place on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Not only can you nibble what he's making, the personal appearances by Rathbun will include recipes using his new products as well as smaller cooking vignettes to teach you the art of grilling. Learn from the master himself! The schedule is:

Friday April 23 at San Antonio Broadway Central Market: 3PM- 9PM
4PM How to Grill a Steak

The line includes a 'Steak and Chop Garlic Salt' and the famous Thai Red Curry-Coconut Sauce (a.k.a “Lobster Shooter” sauce.) During “Thrill of the Grill” at Central Market, Rathbun will focus on recipes using his new barbecue and grilling sauces in Ancho Chili, Honey-Teriyaki and Texas Peach (YUM!). Each 12 oz bottle retails for $8.99 but for the debut, each will be only $7.99!

Recipes will be available in stores and on centralmarket.com beginning April 23.

“It was an extremely long process to launch Kent Rathbun Elements because I wanted to be 100% confident and comfortable with what was in each jar and, ultimately, on the household table,” Rathbun confessed. “I am thrilled to be offering some of my favorite recipes to the experienced and beginner chefs and am honored that Central Market took interest in my line. I look forward to receiving feedback on how well each product is received."

These events are free, open to the public, and while supplies last. We look forward to seeing Kent, his giant smoker and YOU there!

I wish he was making an appearance in Houston. :(

  • Jay on 4.23.2010 at 3:06 PM

What about the stores in The Woodlands?

  • Carlos on 4.23.2010 at 4:30 PM

Wow, I was so excited about this until I realized that Houston is not on the schedule. The other locations are very lucky!

  • Melissa on 4.23.2010 at 4:44 PM

I was so excited to get this email! Then I realized Houston was left out, I wish we had more locations in Houston also!

  • Molli on 4.23.2010 at 4:57 PM

Wow...four locations in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, two in Austin, one in San Antonio and 0 for Houston the largest Texas city and fourth largest in the nation. Nice!

  • Maxine on 4.23.2010 at 4:58 PM

Very unhappy that he is not appearing in Houston. Do you have other Central markets planned around Houston???? KATY,THE WOODLANDS or KINGWOOD????

  • Terri on 4.23.2010 at 5:26 PM

Whaaat???... what's wrong with the Houston area? Seems like a huge booking faux pas, Houston is the largest city in Texas, and the 4th largest in the country... plenty of foodies here Central Market! You also don't have enough stores to service this market... and H-E-B's don't count, we want the real thing!

  • kim on 4.23.2010 at 5:34 PM

it stated all texas locatons. Last time I checked Houston was in Texas.

  • Lou Crivan on 4.23.2010 at 5:37 PM

What a moron! Leaving out the largest city in Texas, and home to one of his "Jaspers"...reason enough to ignore his places like he ignored Houston! Fort Worth-yes, but Houston NO??!! Puhleeze.

  • Don on 4.23.2010 at 6:43 PM

Central Market is one of my favor store in Houston, plus HEB on Bunker Hill. I just don't understand why they left out Houston. I understand the stores I have mention are your most profitable stores in your chain of stores. What gives?

  • Virlene on 4.23.2010 at 6:59 PM

Really crumby he won't be in Houston. Not really surprising as HEB's Central Market are not well represented here in Houston. As others have pointed out we are the largest city in Texas yet we only have one main Central Market here in the city. I guess not enough wealthy people outside of the galleria area and the woodlands. I sense a bias here. Shame on HEB, "your neighborhood" store.

I LIKE OTHERS WAS EXICTED ABOUT THE TEXAS TOUR BUT LIKE A CONCERT YOU REALLY WANT TO ATTEND, HOUSTON GETS SKIPPED OVER. SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN THAT TO ME. IF YOU WONT COME TO H TOWN, I WONT GO TO JASPERS.

  • Pam on 4.23.2010 at 8:00 PM

He can drag his smoker all around the state, but if he skips Houston, he sure hasn't been all around the state of Texas! BTW, @ $8.99 a bottle, maybe just as well.

  • Dana on 4.23.2010 at 8:03 PM

Thank goodness someone planned events in Austin rather than Houston. I'm glad I don't have to drive for 5 hours!! HOORAY for Austin! Let the Houstonians drive this time. I can't wait to see Mr. Rathbun.

  • Kathy on 4.23.2010 at 8:37 PM

We can't even get a decent HEB in Pasadena or Clear Lake let alone a central market. If you have ever shopped at a CM in Austin you would be ashamed of Houston's.

  • Jay on 4.23.2010 at 9:42 PM

I'm glad he is coming to Southlake. But it is at the same time as the Southlake Arts Festival across the street. Not sure if that is good timing.

  • Linda on 4.23.2010 at 11:29 PM

It is not saying good things to your Houston Central Market customers when this store is left out this event or any Central Market event..for that matter. HEB/Central Market...what are you saying to us?

  • Ardis Bartle on 4.24.2010 at 7:43 AM

You must be kidding me...no trip to Houston? Whats this?

  • JMark on 4.24.2010 at 8:37 AM

No Houston well try getting an email 30 minutes before he is supposed to be in San Antonio. They said maybe I could go to Austin today. Well maybe I will just quit going to HEB Central Market and go to Whole Foods. What a screw up on this great chefs introduction of his product line.

  • Jules on 4.24.2010 at 3:55 PM

I have to agree with all the other Houstonians. Are you serious that he can't make it down here. Houston is a make it or break it city for any true Chef. We have the best restaurants in the U.S.!!! Too bad he would have sold as much here as Austin and San Antonio combined. Big Mistake HEB:(

  • Yolanda on 4.24.2010 at 5:39 PM

What no stop in Houston, what a shame HEB :(! We spend lots of time and money at CM and we can't get even an hour of his time...you are joking right? Too bad for Rathburn and HEB because he is not the only chef that knows what he is doing,or does he?

  • Mimi Golan on 4.24.2010 at 11:59 PM

I saw him today in Austin and he said he going to be in Houston for Memorial Day weekend or in June. He's pulling a big smoker and he couldn't get to each city because the traveling takes some time and he has his two kids with him, too!

  • Cathi on 4.25.2010 at 8:25 AM

Why is he skipping the Houston area Central Market stores?

  • SJ on 4.25.2010 at 10:41 AM

I guess HEB/Central Market doesn't care about the Houston shoppers at all!!! If one of the posting about him coming here at Memorial weekend or June is true, the marketing people should have mentioned it in the ad. Also if that's true they should have considered the weather/heat factor and bring him to Houston earlier than late May or June.

  • Janice on 4.25.2010 at 10:42 AM

I am with Central Market and Kent will definitely be coming to Houston. His schedule did not allow the time he needed to get to Houston during these two upcoming weekends. But we are planning that visit now. We are just beginning a great relationship with Kent and hope to work with him on many upcoming events. It's clear he and Central Market have many fans in Houston.

  • Stephen on 4.25.2010 at 3:59 PM

So? What is Houston? West NoooYawrkCity?

  • Tonya on 4.26.2010 at 9:51 PM

Why are none of the Houston area locations on the tour? I was pretty excited until I realized we were getting skipped.
