Hatch is Everywhere!

Hatch in the Bakery

I couldn't wait to taste the Hatch Cheddar Loaf--another magical hatch creation! It was soooo good, with the cheddar taking the hatch heat and rounding its corners. This loaf would be perfect with the Hatch Chicken Salad (you can find it in the Chefs' Case). I'm going to toast a slice and will get back to you, but it feels like it would make a terrific toast or, how about French Toast??

Next I sampled the Hatch Corn Bread Rolls. Another winner! And a great addition to a Green Chili Stew family meal.

So "Get Your Hatch On..." and savor the dozens of Hatch delights available today in the Central Market Bakery!

Sonata Lilies

We have 3 Stems of Sonata Lilies for $7.99 until Wednesday, August 25th.

What's awesome about these lilies is we are "First to Market" with these amazing flowers. They are a lily crop that was grown exclusively for CM and no other retailer has them. And what a fragrance....one of the varieties smells like cotton candy....Yummmmm. The others also have amazing,  sweet fragrances too.

These lilies have a limited availability. Get them while they last!

New Zealand Eve Apples In House

For the past decade or two, New Zealand has dominated the apple scene with some of the most flavorful and interesting varieties; Gala, Braeburn, and Jazz are a few of them. And then something happened: a fluke apple from Minnesota (which is a pretty rough place to grow apples,) the Honeycrisp came through and dominated premium apple markets across the US. Bad news for the Kiwis: it doesn’t grow very well in New Zealand. This year was supposed to mark the first export crop (we booked the first pickings,) and a hailstorm blew in and ruined it all…

So the farmers down there are doing their absolute best to come up with something better. They even hired all of their best marketers to come up with a long list of cute names and color pallets to suit the “experience” of the fruit, which seems to be pretty typical of New Zealand growers. These campaigns have been silly, but the fruit has been quite good.
“Envy”, an apple that just finished up for us, was easily in my top three for 2010. It had incredible balance, rock-hard flesh, and more sugar than any other fruit in the store, which is saying something!
“Eve” is the next in line. Also known as a Mariri Red, this new variety came sprung up from a Braeburn tree, and is promising to be the next big thing.
What else do I know about it? Very little. The growers have been secretive, and I actually found the apple’s parentage off the patent office’s website.
How does it eat? Not half bad! Its’ texture is absolutely perfect with just a bit of sweetness. This is a salad apple if ever there was one.
Has New Zealand beat out the Honeycrisp yet? Nope, or at least not in my opinion; but this is another great variety to try while we wait for America’s best to come off!

Perfect Wines to Match with Hatch!

From the desk of Seth Pollard, Sommelier, CM North Lamar

If you’re looking for a white wine to match with your hatch, chose one with lower acidity . A few that come to mind are the California white blends, some Rieslings, Alsace Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris, or an Oregon Pinot Gris. A crisp Torrontes from Argentina would be a great match!

As for reds, the lighter, softer, juicier reds are the way to go. Rock Lobster Zinfandel would be agreat pairing. Beaujolais works well with hatch and a softer, fruit-driven Pinot Noir or Australian Shiraz are also good choices.

Stop by CM North Lamar Wine Department to find the perfect match for your hatch. And remember, the Hatch Festival is HERE! So come on over and Get Your Hatch On!

Chile & Granola? No Way!

Anderson Trail Natural Soft Granola has introduced a new flavor like no other. Hatch Chile Chocolate Granola tastes like a homemade brownie with the added warmth of New Mexico Hatch Green Chiles. There are so many ways to enjoy this new flavor: mix it with an unsweetened cereal, sprinkled with greek yogurt, on top of your favorite ice cream or as a cookie mix. Anderson Trail is a Central Market customer favorite and made in Ft. Worth, TX.

In December, 2003, Justin Anderson the founder was 16, when he made the granola for his family, friends and teachers at school. The response was overwhelming. His aunt in Colorado urged him to get it out there and share it with everyone. Justin will be at the following stores sampling the product and signing bags:

It's a Bing Thing

Not all energy drinks are created alike, and in fact there are a lot of them out there that, beyond their energy claims, just can't deliver on flavor.

That can't be said about Bing, a new energy drink available only at Central Market. It has 75% less calorioes and carbs than major energy driinks and sodas and tastes great. Bing uses real black bing cherry juice and only pure cane sugar. The cherry juice is high in anti-oxidants and acts as an inti-inflammatory.

Bing also contains Ginko Biloba, Acai, Ginseng, Beta Glucan, Flax Seed Extract and Gurana. It also contains 100% of the daily values of B-Vitamins and Vitamin C with only 40 calories and 10 g of carbs per 12oz can. All that aside, it just plain tastes good and refreshing, and makes an excellent mixer. Try it with ice cream for a yummy float or check out their web site for some cool new adult beverages. Bing is the thing!

Hand Made and Crafted with Love

If you are like me there is nothing quite like a true Pennsylvania Dutch hard pretzel. Sure Potato chips and tortilla chips have there place in the snack world but a well made pretzel is akin to an artisan bread or a bouquetiere cheese.

Though Central Market has the standard machine made pretzels seen everywhere, look a little closer in that section of the aisles for Uncle Jerry's Pretzels. All of their pretzels are fat free, made without oil, shortening, or sweeteners of any kind and they are preservative free. The pretzel bakery is located in the heart of rural Lancaster County, the home of the Pennsylvania Dutch and the first commercial pretzel bakery in the U.S., founded in 1861.

Uncle Jerry's Pretzels are made from a 100 year old family recipe. Each pretzel is individually hand rolled and twisted, then baked in a stone hearth oven. They have a variety of flavors, but the most unique is the Extra Dark. If you like your toast dark, you'll love the smoky flavor of those extra dark pretzels. Match them up with your favorite brew, a dip in a robust mustard or just plain sour cream. I'm getting hungry already. Look for me in the Pretzel aisle. And by the way Uncle Jerry's can only be found in Central Market, an exclusive product with exquisite taste.
