Big flavor in small packages: Kishu Mandarins available exclusively at CM

Written by Austin M., Central Market Produce Inspector on Wednesday, January 14 2009

Tiny, tasty little Kishu Mandarins are often only two-inches in diameter when they're fully grown...but oh, sweet Kishu, how big your flavor is!

Available just a few short weeks each year, those who know the Kishu anxiously await their arrival and their short season (they're only available a few weeks each year.) These tiny mandarins have been one of our most anticipated exclusives and they're finally here!

Things to love about the Kishu: tiny, so they're perfect for popping in a lunch box; they peel very easily; the tender wedges pop right out, easier than candy and loaded with vitamins. Their size and ease of eating make them a big hit with young children and adults alike.

The flavor is very bright and juicy, with notes of honey and heavy tangerine flavor. They are the perfect convenience food.

Originally from Japan, these are grown exclusively for Central Market in Ojai, California at Churchill Orchards. The proprietor, Jim Churchill, is a self-professed “Tangerine Man.” He focuses on growing the best and, despite the difficulty, growing varieties of seedless mandarins.

We’re big fans of this small fruit, and bet you will be, too, after just one taste. Get them while they last!
