Pears At Their Peak!

Written by Austin M., Central Market Produce Inspector on Tuesday, December 08 2009

Here at Central Market, we are BIG fans of Oregon Pears, and now is the best time to enjoy them! As with cherries, Oregon fruit takes longer to mature than California or Washington, leading to some of the most flavorful pears available. And there’s a lot of them – around 800 million a year; enough to wrap around the world twice!

This week, you’ll get a chance to meet a few of our favorites: the Royal Forelle, Red Angelo and Lowry’s Gold.
Royal Forelles and Red Angelos are both a cross between red (Anjou and Sensation, respectively) and Bartlett varieties. Both are firmer varieties with a nice acidic zing (The Royal Forelle is a bit more tart) and plenty of sweetness.
Lowry Golds have been my favorite this year with a juicy, buttery texture and more sugar than other varieties.
Be sure to pick a few of these beauties up next time you’re in!
