SweeTango is Coming!!!

Written by Austin M., Central Market Produce Inspector on Friday, September 03 2010

Last year, a chef buddy of mine sent me this link all excited to try the next big apple variety, the SweeTango: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsPF0UHv110

Fortunately, we already had some on the road! And they were great…really, really great! This being said, they left as quickly as they came. The trees are young, and not producing the quantity we’d like to have.

Developed by the same apple breeders at the University of Minnesota who released the popular HoneyCrisp, SweeTango is a cross between two very popular apples - HoneyCrisp and Zestar! The texture is 100% HoneyCrisp with the juicy, light crunch that has become such a hit. The flavor is more balanced than the HoneyCrisp with a light acidity and serious sweetness. The look…well…SweeTangos are not going to win any beauty contests. They were selected for flavor, and they are truly an amazing eating apple.

Last year, I was most impressed with the abundance of honeycore; bizarre honey-amber splotches in the flesh caused by an overabundance of sugar. Honeycore looks offputting at first, but apple fans worldwide (especially in Japan) have long prized this rare trait.

On Saturday, you should have your chance to try the next big thing in apples, and a serious contender against HoneyCrisp’s popularity.  These will only arrive in one small shipment, so be sure to get in and give them a try!

I checked both CM Austin locations on Saturday and neither had the Sweetango apple in stock. Perhaps you meant next Saturday or sometime later this month? Thanks.

Final field reports are in, and it looks like these will be in our store on TUESDAY the 14th.

We were able to grab over double what we saw last year, which is great news!

Let us know what you think. Please keep in mind this is a public forum - help us "keep it clean." Thanks!
