Breakfast Cheese - Anyone?
Written by Houston CM on Monday, January 05 2009
Cheese for breakfast is an idea whose time has come, and also an idea which has been around for a long, long time. Europeans have been enjoying a wide range of cheeses for breakfast for centuries; isn’t it time you explored beyond that bagel and cream cheese? Anyone with a craving for savory flavors and a little protein in the morning can relate to eating cheese for breakfast; and probably more people would love it if they would just try it.
A good first foray for breakfast cheese newbies: Try creamy foil wrapped medallions of Galbani Bel Paese on a bit of toasted Italian white bread from the bakery; pair with fresh raspberries or a peach. Cow’s milk, Italy
Many a European breakfast begins with a spread of fresh goat cheese on a simple roll or bit of toast; try a terrific fresh goat cheese log from Indiana made by Capriole Farm run by the Schad family. Farmstead cheese with a bright and sunny attitude, try it drizzled with Texas honey and add some strawberries on the plate. Goat’s milk, Indiana.
For a Middle Eastern flavor, try Labane (labne), from Gad Dairy Ltd. a yogurt like spreadable cultured cheese that is delicious on warm pita and eaten with a few nuts such as pistachio or walnuts. Throw in an olive or two and you will really get the experience. We carry one direct from Israel that comes with olive oil and z’aatar. Cow’s milk, Israel.
Back to Italy, try Robiola Bosina, from the Caseificio Dell Alta Langa. This silky and smooth square of milky goodness is made from two milks and has an earthy flavor that pairs well with whole grain breads. Try it with our CM Muesli bread and apple slices or even some blood orange. Cow and sheep’s milk, Italy.
For the more adventurous cheese eater, try our new Ambrosi Gorgonzola with Mascarpone. A masterful combination of two indulgent cheeses which will bring your senses to life in the morning. Pair with fig preserves and toasted rustic bread and serve with fresh blood orange juice. Cow’s milk, Italy.
All of these cheeses are a wonderful foundation for a simple and delicious new way to breakfast; or an old way from the historical view. A bit of whole grain bread, fresh fruit and a creamy cheese make for a palate-pleasing way to start the day. And don’t forget the espresso or café au lait on the table as well!
