Start the new year on a healthy note

January is the time of year when we often find ourselves helping customers who are looking for sea salt, Grade B maple syrup and apple cider vinegar to do the Master Cleanse. It's natural for folks to want to start the new year on a healthy note (and perhaps make up for some of the excesses of the holidays).

The Healthy Living Department at Central Market also offers a number of cleansing kits that will help you detoxify the major organs of your body, safely and gently, over a period of one or two weeks. Vibrant Cleanse by Vibrant Health contains all the ingredients you need to do the Master Cleanse, conveniently packaged for work or travel.

One of the gentlest and most effective cleanse options is the Whole Body Cleanse kit from Enzymatic Therapy. It consists of three products to cleanse, detoxify and rejuvenate your system. First, the milk thistle supplement stimulates bile flow to eliminate toxins from your organs. Next, the daily cleansing fiber binds with the toxins to prevent your system from reabsorbing them. Finally, the laxative formula purges the toxins from your intestines without stimulating peristaltic action (the reason why some cleanse formulas require you to stay near a restroom).

What to eat while you're cleansing? Make it easy on your digestive system, by loading up on fresh fruits and vegetables that are easy to digest and provide needed water. Choose lean protein sources. Nuts provide fiber, and almonds add minerals to the mix. And as always, drink plenty of water!

Once you experience the benefits of a cleanse, you may want to do one every time the seasons change.

Maine Root All-Natural Hand-Crafted Soda Does it again with Pumpkin Pie Soda

Central Market was one of the first to discover this hand made soda crafted in Maine with family roots in Austin. Now Matthew and Mark Seiler have made their personal salute to the holidays with this very limited production soda. In Texas you will only find it in Central Market and each store has received their small allotments today. With flavors of Vanilla, Nutmeg, Clove and Allspice, it tastes like pumpkin pie in a bottle. It is made using only the finest ingredients and they use fair trade organic cane juice as the sweetener.

Mark tells me (he’s the Austinite) that it goes great with Tito's vodka and a splash of grenadine. He calls it the “Headless Horseman”. Kids and adults alike will find it makes a great float with vanilla or caramel ripple ice cream. Try it on ice or as a festive holiday punch base. Put on your mixologist apron and start creating. I’d love to hear what your favorite creation is and I wouldn’t be surprised if there aren’t some possible rib braising applications for this soda too. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Passendale from Belgium!

Another day, another great cheese ….

Such is the life of a foodie at Central Market. So many exciting cheeses we already carry, and still new ones arrive almost every week! This week, among our many new items at CM, is a cheese called Passendale.

Passendale hails from the Flemish village of Belgium, Passchendaele. Known for its creamy buttery cheese wheels (actually shaped more like a loaf of bread); the town is mobbed annually during the August cheese festival. Passendale is a pasteurized cow’s milk cheese, a rich, utterly creamy delight with a yellow semisoft interior and brown/white molded crust.

The paste features many small holes and is best at room temperature or bit warmer to bring out all of its sweet milky character. Buttery overtones and a slightly lactic finish make this cheese excellent for snacking or sandwiches. Passendale matches well with sweet fruits such as pears and grapes. Serve Passendale with sweeter white wines, rosés or as a perfect match to a Belgian beer such as Vielle Provision Saison Dupont (a bottle conditioned Belgian farmhouse ale) with a hearty artisan bread from our Bakery.

Pop! Pop! Pop!

Pop! Pop! Pop!  Westgate gets the Magic Pop!

The typical Westgate Central Market shopping experience begins with the soothing (haha) sound of chirping grackles, followed by the sounds of sliding glass doors as you enter the store. You're shortly thrown into the echoes of a high-ceilinged, fever-pitched grocery shopping circus. But, all that's changed!  As soon as those glass doors slide open, POP, POP, POP!

We're proud to host the ONE AND ONLY Magic Pop machine in Texas!  "What is a Magic Pop?" one might ask.  Well, that's simple - er, not really.  Its this crazy machine that pops out these amazing little puffy rice thingies. Clear enough for you!? To clarify, Magic Pop are fresh, crunchy, light, multigrain snack cakes.

Made from wheat, brown rice, and corn, Magic Pop is fat free and low in calories! They are delicious eaten right out of the bag, or smear them with Nutella spread, guacamole, cream cheese, or whatever you're craving. They're even great with a soup or a salad, or as a healthy taco-shell alternative. Wherever your imagination can take you, you can find a use for the Magic Pop!

By now, I hope you haven't even finished reading this blog, and I hope you're throwing the kids in the car to come hear, see and taste the Magic Pop for yourself!  Pop, Pop, Pop on over to Central Market Westgate!
