Plants are good for you!

Plants thrive on carbon dioxide and improve indoor air quality, which allows you to have a happier, healthier lifestyle.   Scientists at NASA conducted a multi-year study proving that having indoor plants improves air quality, raises oxygen levels, and helps combat “sick building syndrome.”  You can read more about it here and here.

Today’s plant selections are exciting and better than ever in quality and standards.  Check out the awesome Bromeliads we have available in the Floral department. A local grower is now providing us with beautiful Texas-grown plants for both indoors and out.

Plants also make a lasting impression as a gift of sympathy or tribute.  We’ll have many varieties of blooming plants for your Easter and Passover celebrations and memorials.

Our Texas Grown Organic herb plants are now available in a great variety of  5 inch and gallon sizes.  A year-round favorite, fresh herbs (especially organic!) are always in demand the kitchen.  Herbs grow best in outdoor gardens in moderate climates, but they’ll thrive indoors with lots of bright sunlight. Ask our Floral department partners about herbs.

Have a question?  Ask us. If we don’t know the answer, we’ll find it out for you!

Meet Christine from FW

Fort Worth Central Market is pleased to introduce you to one of our talented Cooking School chefs.

Christine Ilarraza has been with Central Market for 6 years, and teaches all of our baking and pastry classes and quite a few of the Kids Camp classes, too!

Always a creative-minded individual, Christine headed an Art Enrichment program for local grade school children in her hometown of Manhattan, Kansas.  She learned the art of baking at the American Institute of Baking, also in Manhattan, Kansas, and honed her skills to an expert level over the ensuing years as manager of a local bakery.

Christine loves working with children and teaching the Kids Camp classes.  She's a patient and fun teacher who encourages the youngsters' natural talents in the kitchen.  She quotes, "kids are great, because they aren't afraid of anything!"

Chef Christine loves exploring the aisles of Central Market and discovering new products, including H-E-B Smoked Brisket, which a great value and makes an easy meal.  She's especially excited about Nielsen-Massey Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Bean Paste, which is pure vanilla with natural vanilla bean seeds in a unique, convenient, paste form that adds a gourmet appearance to any recipe

Speaking of Kids Camp, be sure to register early for our Summer 2009 Kids Camp classes.  Series 1 focuses on basic kitchen essentials and Series 2 explores food from around the world.  There's also a "Kids Camp Extra" class focusing on cupcakes... yum!  Visit our Cooking School page for more information on these or any of our regular classes.  Be sure to check out Christine's class on April 8th, Gluten-Free Baking and Meal Preparation.

Start spring on a healthy note!

The time for spring cleaning our homes is upon us and spring is a great time to cleanse your body, too!  We're exposed to 100,000 different chemicals each day, about a quarter of which are toxic to the human body. Doing an internal cleanse to rid yourself of these toxins is good preventive medicine against fatigue, fibromyalgia, hormone imbalances, immune disorders and weight gain.

A good cleanse will detoxify your body's two main channels of elimination – the liver and the colon. Many experienced users will cleanse once a season, but you can still benefit even if you only cleanse in spring and fall. In between whole-body cleanses, you can do a colon cleanse (if you have digestive problems) or a liver cleanse (if you have hormonal or skin problems); either of these methods will help to jump-start a weight-loss program.

To support your cleansing program, you can use chlorella, spirulina or wheat grass to combat the acidity of toxins. Excercise that causes you to breathe deeply and sweat can help, too. And don't forget to drink 96 ounces of water a day to help your body eliminate toxic substances!

The Healthy Living department at Central Market has a variety of cleansing products by manufacturers including Enzymatic Therapy, RenewLife and Genesis Today. Genesis Today's 4TotalCleanse is on sale for 10% off through March 24th.

Wine favorite at North Lamar

Red and Rare (steak that is)

At Central Market we already have so many good deals I can’t keep them straight in my head, and now we have one more "can’t miss" value treat.

Mas Donis Barrica 2005, 91 points Robert Parker. This is a Spanish red, 85% old vine Grenache/ Syrah blend that would be perfect paired with a rare ribeye ($5.99 lb. for whole rib eye) save $9.00 per lb. or $8.99 lb for precut steaks.

When the spanish say old vine, they mean it. The Grenache is 80+ years and the Syrah is a young vine, 30+ years old. The wine is silky smooth with red and black fruit, nuance of violet, black licorice and slate, has a full rich mid pallet and bright finish. The kicker is that you save $7.00 a bottle. Priced at $9.95, regularly priced at $16.99. I have visited this vineyard in Spain and can testify to the character and quality of this Spanish gem. While you’re here at Central Market picking up a bottle or three, check out all the other "can’t miss" values for Valentines weekend. Don’t forget the flowers…

Cheddar Made the Old Fashioned Way - By Hand

West Country Farmhouse Cheddar

The Green family has been making cheese on their farm in Somerset for four generations. It is a true farmhouse cheese because they use milk exclusively from their own herd of Fresian cows. They are also one of the last cheesemakers who make every wheel by turning the curd by hand on the table.

Of course, they carry the West Country Farmhouse Cheddar PDO, awarded by the EU for making cheddar in the traditional manner in the place where cheddar was born. One of our own cheese mongers, Brandon Campbell, visited Green’s when he went to England last September for the British Cheese Awards. He was poking around in the aging room with Lloyd Green and his nephew Paul, and they came across some older wheels tucked in the corner. They tasted the cheese and discovered that it had a fantastic flavor. Problem was, Lloyd didn’t want to ship a cheese that was this old anymore because he had complaints from many retailers that didn’t know how to handle this majestic old cloth bound cheese, but Brandon convinced the family that Central Market could handle the cheese.

So now, we have an EXCLUSIVE on these beautifully ripened 18 month old wheels.
