Go Texan with Scott Farms produce
Scott Farms in Cisco, Texas is home to a a wealth of the freshest, crispest, most delicious vegetables you can find in Texas, and it's home to Peyton Scott, farmer extraordinaire! If you've lived in Texas for any time at all, you know that our weather can be a bit fickle, and that can make for unpredictable farming. Peyton Scott relies on the tried and true method of "when it's ready, pick it," to determine when his produce will appear at Central Market Fort Worth. This means that we can't always say when we'll have Scott Farms' produce, but you can be sure that when we do, those vegetables will be the best that Peyton Scott has to offer!
Peyton Scott grows his produce both in the field and in a state-of-the-art greenhouse, and his bounty includes Greenhouse Tomatoes, Yellow Squash, Zucchini, Cucumbers (or, as Peyton calls them, "picklers 'n' slicers!), and Sugar Queen Melons. Here's a little information on Texas produce to get you ready for summer!
Tomatoes – Texas tomatoes are vine ripened for that sweet yet acidic taste that is hard to find. There are few vegetables that better mark the summer months than the sweet juiciness of a vine-ripened tomato. Tomatoes are best left unrefrigerated until they are cut. Tomatoes are a rich source of vitamin C and also contain some amounts of vitamins A and B as well as phosphorus, iron and potassium.
Cucumbers – Texas supplies both fresh slicer cucumbers and pickling cucumbers for brining. Although cucumbers are available year round, they are at their best from May through July. One-third of a medium-sized cucumber contains only 15 calories, is fat free, sodium-free and a source of vitamin C and folacin.
Squash – The delicate flavor, soft shell and creamy white flesh of summer squash is a perfect addition to any summer meal. The entire vegetable, including its flesh, seeds and skin, is edible. Squash contain vitamins A and C, some B vitamins, also iron and calcium.
Sugar Queen Melon – This cross between a Muskmelon and an Israel melon is a great summertime choice for dessert, snacking, or taking along to the picnic or barbecue. Not only are they sweet, but they have a great taste and a wonderful fragrance which is unique to the variety.
